Billy Wilder - Martin Scorsese - Ford Coppola - Jack Warner

Billy Wilder Speaks 2006 Wilder was renowned for being one of the wittiest men of his era. Many of his choice anecdotes are on display in the documentary. Filmed for German television. Volker Schlondorff, an accomplished filmmaker himself, sat down with Wilder for a series of interviews, during which the two pros switch from English to German with fluid ease. Wilder tells of the famous actors he worked with Marlene Dietrich, William Holden, and Jack Lemmon, and he touches on the enigma that was Marilyn Monroe, with whom he worked in The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot.

The stories will be familiar to Wilder fans. Schlondorff does well in drawing Wilder out about his experiences for the U.S. military during and after World War II, when Wilder was involved in obtaining footage of the concentration camps. He also tells a scathing story about his bitter reaction when a studio executive suggested changing the nationality of a villainous character in Stalag 17 from German to Polish, in order to make the film more palatable in the profitable (Click on Title to Buy)

Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies 1995 "I can only talk about what has moved me or intrigued me," says filmmaker Martin Scorsese... at the beginning of this four-hour documentary about his passion for U.S. cinema. This personal journey with Scorsese is the perfect antidote to the artificial doctrine of the American Film Institute's so-called 100 best films. The British Film Institute, did a brilliant thing in enlisting Scorsese to speak at length for this project about the history of film. Working with Michael Henry Wilson, Scorsese takes a highly intuitive and heartfelt approach in describing how a number of filmmakers (some famous, some forgotten) carefully layered their visions against the resistance or eccentric whims of powerful producers.

Film clips are plentiful, but they are also more than window dressing for nostalgia buffs. For instance, it's not unusual for Scorsese to return repeatedly to the same film (as Vincente Minnelli's The Bad and the Beautiful) in order to connect points. In the end, this work is truly one of Scorsese's most direct. It has the sort of documentary that makes cinephile weary by junk culture & fall in love with movies all over again (Click on Title to Buy)

The Documentaries of Louis Malle - Eclipse Collection Over the course of a nearly forty-year career, Louis Malle forged a reputation as one of the world’s most versatile cinematic storytellers, with such widely acclaimed, and wide-ranging, masterpieces as Elevator to the Gallows, My Dinner with Andre & Au revoir les Enfants. At the same time, Malle was creating a more personal body of work as a documentary filmmaker. With the discerning eye of a true artist and the investigatory skills of a great journalist, Malle takes us from his French homeland to India to the United States. Six Disc Set Includes: Vive Le Tour Humain, Trop Humain Place de la Republique. An energetic evocation of the Tour de France, a meditative investigation of the inner workings of a French automotive plant. Malle called his groundbreaking Phantom India the most personal film of his career. This extraordinary journey to India, is infused with his sense of discovery, as well as occasional outrage, intrigue & joy.

Calcutta: Malle found that the footage shot in Calcutta was so diverse, intense, and unforgettable that it deserved its own film. The result is at times shocking - a chaotic portrait of a city engulfed in social and political turmoil, edging ever closer to oblivion.

God's Country 1979 Malle traveled into the heart of Minnesota to capture the everyday lives of the men and women in a prosperous farming community. Six years later, during Ronald Reagan's second term, he returned to find drastic economic decline. Free of stereotypes God's Country is a stunning work of emotional and political clarity.

Pursuit of Happiness 1986, Malle, set out to investigate the ever widening range of immigrant experience in America. Interviewing a variety of newcomers (from teachers to astronauts to doctors) in middle & working-class communities from coast to coast, Malle paints a generous portrait of their individual struggles in an increasingly polyglot nation (Click on Title to Buy)
