MAGNUM
(Photojournalist Group) was established in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri
Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, Kevin Carter and David Seymour
These
photojournalist were convinced that photography was the best medium with which to document world events and raise public awareness. These famous photos are a testament to the founding
photographers and the next generation of Magnum photographers
At first glance this is
just a photo of a child scribbling with chalk until you learn:
Teresa, grew up in a concentration camp and was asked to draw a
picture of "home" on the blackboard
Cerro Muriano, Spain
1936: Federico Garcia, Spanish loyalist, collapses
to his death.
This famous photo of a dying soldier looks almost peaceful
amid the stack background
North Carolina 1950:
Segregated water fountains. A photo that is at once stark and
direct.

September 11,
2001 As the emergency crew work, a minister stands amid the wreckage
of the World Trade Center,
dazed by the events. Note the cross like pole at far
right
Sudan 1994 Famine stricken
child crawling towards the United Nations camp. A
vulture in the background is waiting for the child to die. No one knows the fate of this
child as photographer Carter left the scene after
taking the photo. Three months later
Kevin Carter committed
suicide
